Topographic Maps A topographic map is a stylized depiction of a geographic area. These maps represent the
shape of the land as a series of countour lines. Each of the contour lines shows the height of the land along its path.
The USGS has a series of web pages describing topographics maps here.
Historic Topographic Maps A historic topographic map is a map no longer printed by the USGS. The USGS has printed hundreds of thousands of
topographic maps since 1879. Most of these maps are no longer in print.
Our Historic Topographic Map Archive For several years, Novacell has been scanning old topographic maps and creating a digital collection of these snapshots
of the past. The result is an archive containing over 100,000 unique maps and forming the most comprehensive digital collection of this material.
Finding your Historic Topographic Maps As we scanned our maps, we collected information about each map in the archive. We also gathered the same information
about more recent USGS maps. Topodex(tm), our proprietary search tool, allows us to find the maps that best match your requirements by mining the information we've gathered.
Are maps depicting my area of interest available ? For a quick overview of the areas of the United States we cover, click here. As these pages show, we have maps
for most areas of the country.
Where can I find a listing of Novacell's Historic Topographic Maps ? Because of the size of our archive, we do not exhaustively list every map. The first version of our online search tool can be found here.
